Dorado is the ultimate weekend escape. Located just 45 minutes west of San Juan, it offers a distinct change of pace—trading the historic hustle of the city for manicured golf greens, quiet lagoons, and upscale coastal living. Whether you are flying in for a quick getaway or driving down from the metro area, here is how to maximize a weekend in the "Golden City."
Friday: Sunset & Sea Salt
4:00 PM | The Grand Arrival: Check into your resort or villa. If you are staying at a luxury property like the Ritz-Carlton Reserve, your Embajador will likely have a refreshing ginger-lime welcome drink waiting.
6:00 PM | Sunset Cocktails at Positivo: Head to the beachfront for a "Positivo Mule." This is the best spot in town to watch the sun dip below the Atlantic horizon while your feet are tucked into the cool sand.
8:00 PM | Dinner at Pizzería Pirilo: For a casual Friday night, head into the town center. Pirilo is famous for its rustic crusts and expansive craft beer list. Try the "Pizza de Amarillos" for a sweet and savory Puerto Rican twist.
Saturday: Active Pursuits & Hidden Gems
8:00 AM | The Rockefeller Trail: Start your morning with a bike ride or jog along the 11-mile nature trail. It winds through tropical forests and offers glimpses of hidden beach coves you can’t reach by car.
11:00 AM | Beach Day at Balneario Manuel Morales: This is the heart of Dorado’s social scene. The natural rock breakwaters create a giant, calm saltwater pool. It’s perfect for floating with a drink in hand.
1:00 PM | Lunch at the Kiosks: Walk to the stalls near the beach entrance. Look for El Caracol or similar local spots for fresh red snapper or "Mofongo" stuffed with garlic shrimp.
3:00 PM | Ojo del Buey Exploration: Drive 10 minutes to this scenic point. Hike the short trail to see the "Ox's Eye" rock formation and enjoy the rugged, unmanicured side of Dorado's coast.
7:30 PM | An Elevated Evening at COA: Dress up for dinner at Dorado’s premier steakhouse. Known for its custom wood-burning oven and the most extensive wine cellar in the Caribbean, it’s the place for a celebratory weekend meal.
Sunday: Brunch & Slowing Down
10:00 AM | Brunch at Panela: Located at the TPC Clubhouse, Panela offers a sophisticated take on "Cocina Social." Their brunch menu features local flavors like Mallorca breakfast sandwiches and fresh passion fruit mimosas.
12:00 PM | Spa or Swing: * Option A: Book a final treatment at Spa Botánico, where the "Purification" ritual in the outdoor showers will leave you feeling brand new.
Option B: Hit the back nine on the TPC Sugarcane Course for a final challenge before heading home.
3:00 PM | Last Call for Souvenirs: Stop by the boutiques in Dorado del Mar to pick up artisanal Puerto Rican coffee or a bottle of premium local rum.
5:00 PM | Departure: Head back toward San Juan, catching one last glimpse of the limestone haystacks (mogotes) in your rearview mirror.
